Arts Education

Manhattan offersquality arts education to all students. Thier is great value of the arts education as an effective instructional strategy that can impact learning potential students in all content areas. To achieve this, students must have a solid foundation in the disciplines of art if they are apply the arts to further their understanding of academic subjects. Therefore, this website will approach arts education from both the discipline-based and interdisciplinary paths.

Students can select to attend schools with major visual arts programs, such as the High School of Fashion Industries, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, the High School of Art & Design, the High School of Graphic Communication Arts, and Washington Irving High School. They can select to attend schools with major music and performing arts programs, such as Talent Unlimited High School, Professional Performing Arts School, and Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School. In addition to these arts-focused specialty schools, the Manhattan High Schools offer high quality visual arts, music, dance and theatre programs for all students that include the basic visual arts and general music requirements completed in the 10th grade. Finally, many Manhattan High Schools have implemented a strong interdisciplinary culture of the arts in their academic and career education curriculums as well as in their extracurricular activities and after school programs.

Manhattan offers programs specifically designed to support arts education in our schools:

  • Gallery @66 is a student-driven professional art gallery located in the Superintendent’s Office that is sponsored in collaboration with The Museum of Modern Art. Students from all Manhattan High Schools are selected through a competitive process to participate in The Museum Studies Program where they study museum practice. .
  • The Key to Professional Growth: Reflective Practice is a professional development series designed for new teachers of music art. .
  • Multicultural Visions Through the Arts is a professional development series offered to all content area teachers where teachers meet for several weeks at different cultural institutions throughout Manhattan, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Frick Collection, the Asia Society and Musea del Barrio.
