Career & Technical Education

An important aspect of education includes linking the world of work to academic learning for all young people in Manhattan, grades K through 12 and reaching out-of-school youth of age 24. The high Schools in Manhattan career and technical education system includes:

  • Providing continuous high quality professional development that includes how to: (a) integrate academic and occupational content areas; (b) include applied learning outcomes and strategies to achieve high standards for all students in all curriculum areas; (c) integrate career development and technology into existing instruction and (d) provide staff with instructional strategies to reach all students.
  • Preparing all students, including special populations, for post-secondary and/or entry level employment by providing work-based learning experiences that cover all aspects of industry based requirements and that are linked to school-based learning.
  • Encouraging the development of partnership between industry, community, parents and schools.
  • Including the student in the process of his/her own education through the implementation of career planning and student portfolios.

Student-centered strategies of instruction provide opportunities for students to apply content knowledge to real world situations and experiences.
