Professional Development
A community of learners involves all members of the school: supervisors, teachers, support staff, students and their parents. Promote an attitude of life long learning by encouraging curiosity, inquiry, and appreciation for our cultural diversity. Use the wealth of resources available in Manhattan to enrich our learning experiences. The foundation of instructional philosophy is dependent upon using State and City Standards for effective learning and teaching in the classroom. Align curriculum with the Standards to foster high expectations for our community learners. A balanced approach to instruction, with emphasis on strategies for integrating literacy across the curriculum. Teachers are to be supported in their efforts through a variety of professional development experiences including workshops, study groups and in-school professional development. Technology should be utilized to reinforce the content of the workshops. Many lessons and guides to teaching are included on this High Schools in Manhattan website. Several schools have staff developers and teachers’ centers on their premises. These staff developers are teachers who have had extensive classroom experience and have continuous training in adult learning and professional development strategies. In this section you will find instructional resources in the ELA, Mathematics, Social Studies, ESL as well as other valuable links. The above statement is based on a message from Clarise Brooks, former
Exec.Director of Instruction as stated on the mhss.org website 2003.
