Science

The High Schools in Manhattan are dedicated to the promotion of high standards in science education. As such, they promote a hands-on and mentally oridented science curriculum that is aligned with national, state and city educational and performance standards.

Many of the Manhattan high schools have developed projects, collaborations, and partnerships with local colleges, universities, public and private organizations to assist in the promotion of their investigation in physical, life and earth sciences. These include Columbia University robotics competition, Mount Sinai Hospital Brain Explorers, Biotechnology and Mentoring Program and the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Forensics Science Program.

Science teachers in the Manhattan High Schools’ have the opportunity to increase their understanding of the concepts, techniques and pedagogy of instruction to a diverse population through a continuous professional development program established by the former Director of Instruction, Director of Mathematics & Science, and the District Office Instructional Specialists. Summer Institutes and professional conferences sponsored by Rockefeller University, the City University of New York, Mount Sinai Hospital, Project STIR, the Science Council of New York City (SCONYC) to name a few are a hallmark of our professional development programs.
