Special Education

The High Schools in manhattan provide a full range of services for students with disabilities including instructional special education services to greater than 3,700 students with disabilities in 41 high schools. The focus has been on the transition of students with special needs into general education classes, where appropriate, with supplementary support and services in support of the new Continuum of Special Education Services.

Throughout Manhattan High Schools, many small schools within Manhattan have provided special education services through an integrated approach since their inception. In many small schools, students are provided services in integrated settings with special education support through team teaching, special education teacher support services, and special class tutorials. In the larger comprehensive high schools and vocational schools, students with disabilities are provided special education services in team teaching classrooms, in general education classrooms with the support of a paraprofessional and/or a special education teacher, and in special classrooms. All students with disabilities are provided with their IEP mandated related services to supplement their primary academic program.

In the Manhattan High Schools all special education supervisors, teacher, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and all other support personnel are part of the education community that work collaboratively with general education and bilingual staff to meet the needs of all students in the least restrictive environment. All of our students are “special” and we provide differentiated teaching to meet the needs of all students.

Information about special education services on the New York City Department of Education’s website can be found at http://www.nycenet.edu/offices/spss/dlst.asp.
